FATTY LIVER DISEASE

Fatty liver disease is becoming more common nowadays. While in the past fatty liver occurred from alcoholic intake now most of fatty livers come from excess calories.

Normal liver cells are being replaced by fat cells. One of the side effects of fatty liver is type II diabetes, Until now noboby could explain this connection.

Chronic calorie excess leads to accumulation of liver fat which spills over the pancreas which would produce less insulin as there is a decrease of Beta cells .

This is the reason why diabetes is so prevalent nowadays. Normally carbohydrates are stored in the muscles, the peak of fat deposition occurs 5 hours after breakfast.

If the person is insulin resistant and, carbohydrates cannot be stored safely in the muscles Therefore fat goes to the liver then to pancreas and the person becomes diabetic. If less food is eaten, there is 30% drop in liver fat in only 7 days.

In conclusion, liver fat drives pancreas fat while excess pancreas fat drives type II diabetes.

Liver fat is dangerous as it kills the healthy  liver cells. Liver cancer may follow fatty liver. In addition liver cirrhosis may occur which might necessitate a liver transplant

A new kind of medication is being tested that will eliminate fatty liver. It would be interesting tos ee whether it will lower the incidence of type II diabetes.
