We have been remiss in only checking cholesterol and triglyceride levels in adults.
However, children and adolescents are getting fatter and need to have their fat blood levels also.
The American Pediatric Association is recommending universal screening of lipid levels in children at 9 to 11 years of age and again 17 to 21 years of age.
As children are getting fatter, their fat levels are high just as their blood sugar.
Medications for all these conditions are offered to children as well as children as young as 7 and up have had high blood pressure and have died from heart attacks. Statins, Zetia and fenofibrates are now prescribed to children. Blood sugar lowering medications are also given.
Remember that the fat kids of today will become the fat adults of tomorrow if they survive that long!
As a matter of fact, the children of today will live less than their parents.
