Sugar substitutes are generally safe!
They are used for weight loss, diabetes and cavities.
Even though people who used sugar substitutes and those who did not lose the same amount of weight, on the long run, sugar substitutes can help maintain weight loss.
Replacing one sugar free soda a day with a sugar free drink could result in losing 1.4 lbs per year.
How much diet soda can we consume safely?
Aspartame: 18 to 19 cans of diet soda.
Saccharin: 9 to 12 packets
Acesulfame-K: 30-32 cans of diet soda.
Sucralose: 6 cans of diet soda.
This does not mean that we can consume as many as that. We have to use moderation. The safest sugar substitute is saccharin (Sweet and Low®) Equal® has formaldehyde and Splenda® prevents thyroid hormone’s action and may be detrimental for weight loss.
However while diet sodas do not contain calories, they are not healthy either. The diet sodas may increase hunger as they do not provide any nutritional value. This does not happen in sugar substitutes in food. Children and pregnant mothers should restrict their sugar substitutes as we do no know what the effect of these products have on children and fetuses. Teenage girls also develop osteoporosis from carbonated drinks of any kind.
In general sugar substitutes are safe if used in moderation and if added to a healthy balanced diet. They help with weight loss and
weight management. Diabetics are encouraged to use them.
